“Bolívar” wins the 2014 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in biography

On April 11, 2014, Marie’s “Bolívar: American Liberator” won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for biography.

The jury’s citation read: “In this glowing and exhilarating new biography on South American liberator and hero Simón Bolívar, the judges were swayed by the muscularity of Marie Arana’s prose, the grand sweep and enthralling emotions that she managed to convey throughout, and the under-recognized importance of this story to understanding where we are now in the history of the Western Hemisphere. The author’s command of the Spanish language and culture, along with her judicious use of new primary documents, is handled with clarity and authority.” You can see the report on all the L.A.
